Update: May 2020

This article was originally created in 2018 and completely updated in May 2020. I will not be updating it again going forward.

This is the first tutorial in my series Introduction to Hosting WordPress on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

In this post I am going to walk through the steps for launching an EC2 instance in Amazon Web Services (AWS). I will be launching an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) from the AWS Marketplace that is specifically created to run a WordPress site. The image is provided by Bitnami, a software company that specializes in deploying open-source software. I am using Firefox on a Mac, but these steps are platform- and browser-agnostic. You need an AWS account and the ability to log in to that AWS account as either the root user, or, if you have set up separate IAM (Identity and Access Management) accounts, then an IAM account with admin privileges.

Opening spread of Wane feature, Issue 5, The Infamous magazine, 2011.

An interview with Wane COD, one of the graffiti world’s most respected writers, was one of two feature articles that I wrote for the fifth issue of The Infamous magazine. I talked to Wane about growing up in the Bronx, the allure of travel, how to make a living out of doing something you love, and more. We also discussed the time he has spent working in the fashion world as well as starting his own apparel company, his collaborations with other apparel makers, documenting the history of graffiti culture, and much more.

I interviewed Mr. Brainwash, of “Exit Through the Gift Shop” fame, in the summer of 2011 for a feature we were doing in The Infamous magazine. As anybody who has seen the documentary might expect, Mr. Brainwash is, um, eccentric, and it was a long and drawn-out conversation, but I found him to be a nice guy, gracious and sincere – but definitely a little over the top.

Event > Demo Day at the PGA Merchandise Show

Demo Day at the PGA Merchandise Show, 2009.

When I worked at PGA Magazine the organization was very involved in the PGA Merchandise Show, an annual event held in late January in Orlando, Florida. Though the PGA Merchandise Show was produced by Reed Exhibitions, we partnered with Reed on several programs to maximize the show’s impact and interest to the target audience, golf professionals, by finding new ways to bring these golf professionals together with companies in the industry.

I worked with the creator and art director of The Infamous, Shaun Baron, to conceive and execute all of aspects of the magazine. All content was created by ourselves and by contributors, exclusive to The Infamous, and I coordinated gathering and preparing that content: text, photos, illustrations, videos – everything. After writing, re-writing, and proofing the final pages I worked with the printer and our distributors – and my local post office – to get The Infamous to its readers.

I started learning the Russian language in high school and Russian language, culture, its people, its politics, and their place in the world have remained a great interest of mine. In the summer of 2001 I completed a six-week study abroad program at the St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University.
